Dear reader,

Today, on 8 October, we celebrate Hydrogen Day, I wish all of you a fantastic day and for those interested there is a 24hrs online hydrogen conference ongoing with key speakers of the sector.

As Europe’s ambition for hydrogen is huge, we organise for the first time ever THE EUROPEAN HYDROGEN WEEK from 23 to 27 November 2020, please make sure to block these dates, as it will be amazing. On the 26th, the European Hydrogen Forum jointly organised with DG GROW will have leading figures of the industry and European policy makers debating on how to realise the European hydrogen strategy. In addition, we will reveal cutting-edge research results and give awards to fantastic achievements.

Last month’s newsletter showed how we moved from kW to MW scale in electrolysers. On 29 October we organise a webinar with the Dutch ISPT on moving to GW scale with interventions of the European Commission, the US DOE, Australia government and the German NOW. Be there!

In the fact of the month we talk about hydrogen in maritime applications. We have supported several projects in the past but next year we will step up our action in this field and announce new demonstration projects as well as projects in the area of regulation codes and standards for maritime, which are desperately needed.

Enjoy the read,

Bart Biebuyck, FCH JU Executive Director

CertifHy - Designing the first EU-wide Green Hydrogen Guarantee of Origin for a new hydrogen market

fch, 07.10.2020

As mentioned in the European Hydrogen Strategy recently launched, hydrogen as an energy carrier offers an important solution to decarbonise industrial processes and economic sectors where reducing carbon emissions is both urgent and hard to achieve.

However, hydrogen may be produced through a variety of pathways, each one with its own range of emissions depending on the technology and energy source used. It is therefore indispensable to have a robust and reliable instrument in place to guarantee the environmental characteristics of the hydrogen product.

Currently the EU is leading the way in hydrogen certification through an FCH JU project CertifHy that started back in 2014. The project succeeded at delivering a design for a Guarantees of Origin Scheme for Hydrogen and developed a roadmap for its establishment. The FCH2 JU continued to support this initiative for a second phase where the Guarantees of Origin Scheme was tested in a pilot operation, while tackling the complexities and challenges in the full chain from auditing the plants to verification of hydrogen production batches and handling GHG allocation issues.

Now the FCH2 JU is ready to proceed with the third phase of this initiative, where it will support the harmonisation efforts in the establishment of Guarantees of Origin Schemes for Hydrogen across Member States. In an even more ambitious move, the FCH2 JU will try to facilitate the harmonization of hydrogen certification at an international level, ensuring that we have a common agreement worldwide on how to characterize renewable and low-carbon hydrogen products.

For further information about the CertifHy initiative, please visit the dedicated webpage.

Hydrogen for maritime use

fch, 07.10.2020

Cargo vessels, cruise ships and ferries are all important parts of the global economy. For example, around 90% of all freight goods are transported at sea. But most ships burn fossil fuels for power, emitting CO2 and other pollutants. Ocean freight shipping alone releases about 3% of global greenhouse gases, a figure that is predicted to grow as the maritime sector continues to expand.

Four FCH JU-funded projects are researching the use of hydrogen and fuel cells to replace fossil fuels to power ships:

  • MARANDA project, aims to develop a 165-kW PEM fuel-cell powertrain able to provide power to a research vessel’s electrical equipment and its dynamic positioning while in research mode, in the extreme cold of the Arctic
  • FLAGSHIPS project is demonstrating that two commercial vessels, a push boat for river navigation and a car ferry could operate on fuel cells, with total 1 MW of PEM fuel cell power installed
  • ShipFC will install 2 MW of SOFC fuel cell power running on green ammonia on the platform support vessel “Viking Energy”
  • H2PORTS project will demonstrate at the Port of Valencia in real port operations, 2 dedicated equipment, specifically a reach stacker for container handling and a yard tractor for truck trailer handling, as well as a mobile HRS

Following the FCH2 JU’s 2020 call for proposals, two additional projects should start in 2021 and will focus on:

  • Demonstration of liquid hydrogen as a fuel for segments of the waterborne sector
  • Pre-Normative Research on hydrogen-based fuels solutions for passenger ships
